TRAILER

Plot
In the sequel to Lewis Carroll's original stories, Alice Kingsley, now 19, attends a party at a Victorian estate shortly after the death of her beloved father. The party, unbeknownst to Alice, is an engagement party planned by her mother and sister. Just as the arrogant and dull Hamish Ascot proposes to Alice under a gazebo and under the eyes of hundreds of snooty society-types, Alice spots a white rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch. In shock and confusion, she runs off into a maze and follows the White Rabbit through it, only to later tumble down a rabbit hole into Underland (more commonly referred to as "Wonderland" by it's inhabitants), a place she has visited ten years before, yet doesn't remember. In Wonderland, she reunites with her childhood friends, including the Mad Hatter, who explains to Alice that they need her help in over-throwing the Red Queen, who has assumed control of all Wonderland. Alice then embarks — assuming both large and small sizes — on an adventure of self discovery and to save Wonderland and her Wonderland friends from both the Jabberwocky and the Red Queen's reign of terror.

Cast and characters
Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley: A 19-year-old young lady "who doesn't quite fit into Victorian society and structure." Her return to Wonderland "becomes a rite of passage as she discovers her voice and herself." Alice will evolve over the course of the new film into a more empowered heroine than in previous incarnations.

Wonderland residents
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. Tim Burton explained that Depp "tried to find a grounding to the character, something that you feel, as opposed to just being mad. In a lot of versions it’s a very one-note kind of character and you know his goal was to try and bring out a human side to the strangeness of the character." The orange hair is an allusion to the mercury poisoning suffered by many hatters who used mercury to cure felt. According to Depp: "I think he was poisoned, very, very poisoned, and it was coming out through his hair, through his fingernails and eyes." The Mad Hatter is Alice's ally. Wasikowska says: "They have an understanding about each other. They both feel like outsiders and feel alone in their separate worlds, and have a special bond and friendship." In an interview, Depp stated his experience was "A dream come true" and that the Mad Hatter is like "A mood ring, his emotions are very close to the surface"
Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Bonham Carter's head will be increased in size by three times on screen. The Red Queen has a growing tumor in her head which makes her unable to control her emotions. Bonham Carter's character is a combination of the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts.
Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Her character does not require digital manipulation.[16] Hathaway summed up her character with a caption on a magnet of Happy Bunny holding a knife; "Cute but psycho. Things even out." Her character also doesn't walk, but instead floats. She is very eccentric and dramatic.
Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit. Sheen stated, "The White Rabbit is such an iconic character that I didn’t feel like I should break the mold too much."
Alan Rickman as Absolem, the Caterpillar. Rickman was filmed while recording his voice in a studio, but his face won't be composited onto the character's face as originally planned.
Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat.
Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Lucas' face was digitally inserted for both characters, while the body was computer-generated.
Christopher Lee as the Jabberwocky. An item in the film called "The Oraculum" suggests that John Tenniel's original design for the Jabberwock will be used in the film.
Paul Whitehouse as the March Hare. The March Hare will be computer animated.
Barbara Windsor as the Dormouse. The Dormouse will also be computer animated.
Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts
Michael Gough as the Dodo.
Timothy Spall as the Bloodhound.

Real-world residents
Eleanor Tomlinson as Fiona Chataway, an unfriendly girl Alice knows before she falls down the rabbit hole.
Jemma Powell as Margaret Manchester
John Hopkins as Lowell Manchester
Lindsay Duncan as Helen Kingsley
Marton Csokas as Charles Kingsley
Leo Bill as Hamish Ascot
Burton and Bonham Carter's children will have cameos in the film.

Production
Development and writing
Joe Roth was developing Alice in Wonderland in April 2007 at Walt Disney Pictures with Linda Woolverton as screenwriter. Woolverton added a socio-political context to the story. That November, Burton signed with Disney to direct two films in Disney Digital 3-D, which included Alice in Wonderland and his remake of Frankenweenie. He explained "the goal is to try to make it an engaging movie where you get some of the psychology and kind of bring a freshness but also keep the classic nature of Alice." On prior versions, Burton said "It was always a girl wandering around from one crazy character to another, and I never really felt any real emotional connection." His goal with the new movie is to give the story "some framework of emotional grounding" and "to try and make Alice feel more like a story as opposed to a series of events." Burton focused on the Jabberwocky poem as part of his structure. Burton also stated that he doesn’t see his version as either a sequel to any existing Alice movie or as a "re-imagining".
